4:16 AM

Good morning! Welcome to our coverage of Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan).

4:16
In another minute, 04:17:32 to be precise, at T-3 hours the orbiter will change over to Medium Gain Antenna.

4:18

This will be done in order to receive and emit radio signals by the spacecraft.

4:23

4:26

4:32

Mars Mission is synonymous with technicalities, but we don't want you confused! Here's a quick roll-over graphic to explain what different parts of the orbiter

4:44

If Mangalyaan successfully enters the Mars orbit, here's what Isro chairman says will happen: "India will become the first Asian country to have achieved this and if it happens in the maiden attempt itself, India could become the first country in the world to have reached distant Mars on its own steam in the first attempt" - K Radhakrishnan

4:44

Quite a feat, isn't it?

5:00

5:01

Isro confirms! And with that, step 1 of Mars Orbiter Mission is successful.
5:08

Trivia: More than half the world's previous attempts - 23 out of 41 Mars missions - have failed, including attempts by Japan in 1999 and China in 2011.
5:15

But did you know NASA and ESA (European) are planning to put men (and women) on Mars by the year 2035?

5:26

As you can see, the next part of operation is due at 6:56am or T-21 minutes. The spacecraft will rotate forward towards Mars then.
5:28

By the way, Isro is not going to stop at Mars. According to the space department secretary, Isro has plans of a mission to explore Sun's corona as well!

5:38

Did you know? The final leg of the Mars Orbiter Mission marks the end of an almost year-long journey. If it succeeds, India will become the first country to reach the red planet in its first attempt!

6:50

6:54

Step 2: Forward rotation to start at T-21, or 06:56:32 precisely.
6:56

Mangalyaan has been slowed down. Gravity of Mars will attract it: TV reports
6:58

Isro yet to confirm, says forward rotation 'must have begun'. To confirm in 12 minutes.
6:59

Forward rotation is required to align the direction of firing for effective braking of the spacecraft!

7:08

It is T-10 minutes, folks! At 07:17:32 the liquid engine will start burning. Fingers crossed!
7:09

So has the Mars Orbiter successfully completed step 2 of its final leg? YES, says Isro! Forward rotation has started.

7:14

T-5. Eclipse starts, confirms ISRO!

7:15

2 more minutes to go! Are you ready?
7:17

It's 7:17am. The liquid engine should start burning any moment now.
7:19

'Burn must have started,' says Isro. Wait for confirmation!

7:21

We've crossed T. It's T+4 minutes now!
7:22

Come on, Isro. This is getting stressful.
7:25

While we wait for Isro to confirm

7:26

Mangalyaan has gone behind Mars and the radio link has been blocked by the red planet.
7:26

Isro says we should expect communication blackout.

7:31

JUST IN: Liquid engine burn CONFIRMED! Mangalyaan inches closer to Mars! All engines are firing.

7:37

Mars occult has started. At 07:41:46 or T+24.23 minutes the liquid engine will stop burning.
7:40

While we wait, here's more entertaining trivia. Don't go away! Did you know that during a Mars winter, almost 20% of the air freezes? Brrr.
7:43

7:44

Engines stop burning? Wow, that was quick! Go Manglayaan! Isro yet to confirm though.
7:46

At 07:45:10 which is T+27.78 minutes the Mars occult should end.

7:52

Mars occult ends! Telemetry 'mast have activated' says Isro. And we wait, again.
7:53

Okay, this one will blow your mind. Mars trivia, desi style: The entire operation costs Rs 450 crore, which is Rs 11.25 per km, less than what many autowallahs in India charge. Beat that.
7:56

Reverse rotation of the spacecraft should have ended by now. It was set to end at 07:52:46 or T+35.23 minutes.
8:01

Aaaand Mangalyaan is a success! MOM passes final test, enters Mars orbit!
8:02

Isro erupts in celebration! PM Modi cheers.

8:03

Happy Mars day, India!

8:08

That was Isro's first tweet from Mars! Believe it.
